This small carte de visite shows Napoleon III facing front, bearing the mark of H. Tournier of Rue de Seine in Paris, and it was later filed in an album of portraits tied to Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. Napoleon III ruled France from 1852 to 1870, and his support for the French intervention in Mexico from 1861 to 1867 put Maximilian on a throne that collapsed when French troops withdrew and Maximilian was executed in 1867. Cartes de visite like this one, albumen prints on card mounts, were cheap and widely traded, so a ruler's face could circulate as political messaging.
