Gregory Pincus, the biologist who helped develop the first oral contraceptive, appears here in a straightforward head-and-shoulders study taken in 1961, the year the pill was approved for contraceptive use in the United States. Pincus, who co-founded the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology in Massachusetts, worked with John Rock and Min-Chueh Chang on the hormonal research that led to the drug, a collaboration that drew both praise and controversy. The plain, frontal pose gives the portrait the sober tone of a scientist's official likeness rather than a publicity image, which suits the subject's reputation as a careful, sometimes contentious researcher.
