Stark Young, the Mississippi-born writer and critic, sits for this front-facing, half-length portrait taken in 1940 by Al Aumuller, a photographer for the New York World-Telegram. By then Young was best known as drama critic for The New Republic and as the author of So Red the Rose (1934), a novel about a Mississippi family before and during the Civil War. He was also a respected translator of Chekhov, whose plays he helped bring to American audiences. The newspaper's staff portraits of this kind were routine studio-style sittings, and the photo offers a direct view of a man who shaped American theater writing for decades.
