Margaret Bourke-White is shown here in a half-length view, turned to the left and holding her camera, the instrument that made her one of the most recognized photographers of her generation. Born in 1904, she became a staff photographer for Fortune and then one of the first women hired as a staff photographer at Life when it launched in 1936. The 1940 date places the portrait in the years when she was documenting the war in Europe and building her reputation for bold, dramatic images of industry and conflict.
