Shown in half-length and facing left, Margaret C. Anderson wears a turban-style hat in this 1930 portrait by Man Ray, made during the years when Anderson was based in Paris. Anderson founded the literary magazine *The Little Review* in Chicago in 1914, and in New York it serialized James Joyce's *Ulysses* until a 1921 obscenity conviction halted the run. Man Ray, the American photographer and painter working in Paris, made portraits of many writers and artists in his circle. This print is preserved in the papers of journalists Janet Flanner and Solita Solano.
