Yellow Wolf, a Nez Percé man who lived from 1855 to 1935, is shown here in a half-length study turned to the left, with the photograph giving close attention to his clothing and dress. He had fought in the 1877 conflict that followed the flight of Chief Joseph's band toward Canada, and he later lived to tell his own account of those events. Portraits like this one, made around 1909, were widely circulated to document Native life at a time when older ways were changing quickly.
