Sam Cooke appears here in a half-length view, standing and turned to the right as he sings into a microphone, a pose that captures the warmth and ease that made him one of the most celebrated voices of the early 1960s. The picture comes from the New York World-Telegram & Sun collection, a large body of newspaper photographs that the paper's staff shot for news and feature use, and this one dates to 1964. That year Cooke was at the height of his recording and performing career, with songs that bridged gospel, soul and pop, so the image is a useful record of how publicity photography presented a performer during that peak period.
