Shown in half-length and turned to the right, this print presents William Penn (1644-1718), the Quaker who founded the colony of Pennsylvania after receiving a royal charter in 1681. Penn laid out Philadelphia as a planned city and promoted the colony as a place of religious tolerance. The print was issued by Goupin & Co. of Paris around 1897, while its copyright notice names the Boston publisher Little, Brown, & Co., a reminder that American publishers often commissioned illustrations from European firms.
