Physicist Albert Einstein appears here in a half-length view, turned slightly to the right, but this is a photographic reproduction of a painting by B.F. Havill, not a photograph taken from life. Made around 1945, it arrived when Einstein's name stood for the theory of relativity and, since his 1939 letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt urging American research into nuclear chain reactions, for the atomic age as well. The record notes a U.S. Copyright Office entry, which shows the painting was registered for publication.
