This half-length portrait shows the journalist Winifred Black, who wrote under the byline Annie Laurie, turned to the right. The 1912 copyright notation in the record suggests the photograph was made for wide publication, which fits her career. Black was a well-known newspaper writer for the Hearst papers, where her reporting on urban poverty, public institutions and social reform reached a large readership. Her pen name became nearly as famous as her work, and portraits like this one helped build the public image of a woman writer who was then a rarity in American newsrooms.
