Shown in half-length and turned to the right, this engraved likeness depicts David Emanuel Twiggs, a Georgia-born career army officer whose service ran from the War of 1812 through the Mexican-American War. Twiggs earned a reputation as a hard-fighting division commander in Mexico and later led U.S. Army forces in Texas. In February 1861, as Texas moved toward secession, he surrendered those troops and federal property to state authorities, an act that cost him his commission. The engraving, made sometime between 1820 and 1862, reflects the period when printed portraits of military men circulated widely as signs of public standing.
