Shown in a half-length pose turned to the right, this portrait records Gen. Calixto García Iñiguez, the Cuban independence leader, near the end of his life. The print comes from the Washington, D.C., studio of George Prince. García had fought Spain through the Ten Years' War and the later war that began in 1895, and by 1898 he was in Washington pressing for a recognized role for Cuban forces after the Spanish-American War. He died there in December 1898, so the picture shows how he presented himself to American audiences at the close of his career.
