Calixto García Íñiguez was a Cuban general who fought against Spain in both the Ten Years' War and the War of Independence, and this half-length portrait shows him facing right in the dress of a man of military rank. The record dates the print to around December 1898, the month the Treaty of Paris formally ended the Spanish-American War, a moment when García's name was closely tied to the Cuban independence struggle. The photograph carries a copyright notice in the name of Geo. Prince, a photographer, and the date and caption come from an old card whose details have not been independently verified.
