Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, is shown here at half length, standing and turned toward the right, a pose that was common in nineteenth-century portrait engraving. The picture dates to around 1898, decades after Jackson's time in office from 1829 to 1837, so it reflects how later generations chose to remember him rather than a likeness made from life. Jackson's combative style, his military reputation from the War of 1812, and his controversial policies toward Native nations have made him one of the most debated figures of the period, and portraits like this one show how his image was circulated long after he died in 1845.
