Few portraits of Andrew Jackson were made so close to his death. This daguerreotype is inscribed with a Hermitage date of April 15, 1845, less than two months before he died there in June. The seventh president was then in failing health, and the plate was copied and engraved as the frontispiece of the *Democratic Review* that September. Several makers have been credited with the original, including Anthony, Edwards and Co. and Brady, so the exact photographer remains uncertain.
