Someone scratched Cassius M. Clay's name into the back of this plate, which gives the portrait a firm identity that many daguerreotypes lack. Clay was a Kentucky abolitionist and newspaper editor whose Lexington paper, *The True American*, drew threats and was attacked by a mob in 1845, and he stayed politically outspoken for decades afterward. The sitter appears half-length, turned three-quarters to the right, and the gold toning warms the silvery surface. The record suggests the studio of Southworth and Hawes or Mathew Brady, though the attribution remains uncertain.
