Pencil on the back of this plate names the sitter as Christofle, most likely Charles Christofle (1805–1863), the Paris silversmith whose firm became known for electroplated silverware, a process that gave base metal a silver finish. The half-plate daguerreotype was gold toned, which deepened its tones and strengthened the image surface. It was probably made in Mathew Brady's studio during his stay in Europe in 1851 and 1852, though the attribution to that trip is an estimate. A number scratched on the face of the plate suggests it was tracked within the studio's own sequence.
