George Jay Gould, the railroad and financier son of Jay Gould, is shown here in a half-length view turned toward the right, a quiet studio-style pose that departs from the grander full-length portraits often made of wealthy men of his era. The print dates to about 1911 and carries a copyright credit to G.A.M. Morris of Lakewood, New Jersey, a resort town where Gould's family kept a large estate and where wealthy New Yorkers spent their summers. Gould (1864-1923) headed the Missouri Pacific and other rail lines his father had built, and portraits like this one were widely circulated in the business press of the period, when newspapers relied on photographic likenesses of prominent figures.
