Shown full length and holding a tennis racket, this young man is Jay Gould II, a grandson of the railroad financier Jay Gould and an accomplished amateur tennis player. The racket signals the sporting leisure that wealthy families of the period cultivated, and the upright, frontal stance was a conventional way to present a gentleman in a studio portrait. The photograph was taken around 1905 by G.W. Pach of Lakewood, New Jersey, a winter resort popular with well-to-do New Yorkers, so the image reflects both the Gould family's social world and the commercial portrait trade of the resort town. Gould died in 1935.
