This full-length view shows Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt standing and facing the camera, a more formal pose than many of the head-and-shoulders portraits of her from the period. She had known Theodore Roosevelt since childhood in New York and married him in 1886. The photograph is dated to about 1901, the year he succeeded William McKinley after McKinley's assassination in September, when she was about to take up the role of first lady. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which suggests it was made for wider circulation.
