Here Harry Houdini stands full length, turned to the right, with heavy chains wrapped around his body, a publicity image of the kind he used to build his reputation as an escape artist. Made around 1905, when he was touring vaudeville and dime-museum stages with challenges to lock and restraint, the picture shows the stagecraft behind his act, with the chains serving as both prop and promise. The "Handcuff King" note on the record reflects the nickname he earned for daring audiences to bind him, a showmanship that made him one of the most famous performers of his era.
