Shown full length, standing and turned toward the right, the dancer poses in a way that suited a performer whose fame rested on movement and stage presence. Lola Montez was born Eliza Gilbert in Ireland and adopted a Spanish identity for the stage. She rose to fame across Europe in the 1840s, where her romantic entanglements with powerful patrons drew as much attention as her dancing. This picture is a 1940 print made from a photograph taken between 1840 and 1860, so it preserves her image from the years when her celebrity was at its height. She died in New York in 1861.
