Shown full length on a lawn and turned to the right, William Howard Taft appears here around 1908, the year he won the Republican nomination for president. The print carries a U.S. Copyright Office notation, which suggests it was made for wide public circulation, as many political portraits of the period were. By then Taft had served as secretary of war under Theodore Roosevelt and as the first civil governor of the Philippines. The open outdoor setting sets this picture apart from the more formal studio portraits common in that era.
