In this full-length portrait, a young Carl Spaatz stands squarely in front of a biplane, the aircraft itself as much a part of the composition as the man. Photographs like this from the 1910s often pair a subject with a machine to show that the pilot was part of a new and still uncertain field. Spaatz, born in 1891, went on to command American air forces in Europe during the Second World War and became the first Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force in 1947. Seen from that later career, the picture captures him near the start of a path that carried him from early aviation to the top of a new service.
