Ted Lewis stands full length and faces the camera in this 1931 portrait, a pose that suits a performer whose stage presence was as much about his appearance as his music. Lewis, born in 1892, became one of the best-known bandleaders of the 1920s and 1930s, recognizable by his top hat, cane, and clarinet, and by his catchphrase, "Is everybody happy?" The print comes from the New York World-Telegram and the Sun newspaper collection, whose photographers recorded the celebrities and public figures of the period for daily publication.
