This full-length portrait shows Gen. Charles Mangin standing and facing the camera, a formal pose suited to a senior French officer of the First World War era. Mangin commanded troops at Verdun in 1916, when he led counterattacks that retook Fort Douaumont and Fort Vaux, and he later led the Tenth Army in the final Allied offensives of 1918. He was also a strong advocate for using colonial African soldiers in the French army, a position that shaped his reputation both during and after the war. The photograph's date range of 1910 to 1925 places it across these years of his career.
