Shown in half-length and turned to the left, Brigadier General George Cadwalader wears his military uniform, a choice that signals his rank at a time when he was establishing his public career. Born in 1806, Cadwalader later served as a volunteer officer in the Mexican-American War, and this mezzotint, dated around 1842, predates that service. Mezzotint was a favored method for reproducing portraits in the 1840s because its rich, soft gradations of light and shadow suited both cloth and skin. The print carries a copyright line in the name of Thomas A. Andrews, who is credited with its publication.
