Count Eduard Ivanovich Totleben, the Russian army engineer, appears here in uniform in a half-length pose turned slightly to the left. He became known for directing the fortification and defense works during the Siege of Sevastopol in the Crimean War (1854–1855), when his engineering work helped the city hold out for nearly a year. This carte de visite was made by the St. Petersburg studio Vezenberg & Co. between 1880 and 1886, and it survives in the George Kennan Papers, which reflect the American writer's interest in Russia.
