Philander Chase Knox, the Pittsburgh lawyer who later served as U.S. Attorney General and Secretary of State, appears here in a half-length portrait turned slightly to the left. The print dates to about 1904, a period when Knox was building his national reputation, having been elevated from local legal work to prominent public life. It bears the copyright mark of C.A. Jarrett, a Pittsburgh photographer, which points to a studio portrait made for wide circulation in that city. Knox's career, from trust-busting cases to diplomacy, makes this image a useful glimpse of a politician at the start of his rise.
