Here Sarah Bernhardt poses as Camille, the doomed heroine of Alexandre Dumas fils's play *La Dame aux Camélias*, seated on a bed with her head resting on her hands. The role of a Parisian courtesan dying of tuberculosis was one of the signature parts of Bernhardt's long career, and she performed it for audiences in Europe and America for decades. The photograph, credited to the Rochlitz-Wheeler studio, captures the weary, lovelorn mood of the play's final act. Bernhardt, who lived from 1844 to 1923, was one of the most celebrated actresses of her era and used photographs to spread her image well beyond the theater.
