Shown seated in full length and turned slightly to the left, Col. George E. Waring appears in a studio portrait made around 1897, the year before his death. Waring, a Civil War veteran and sanitary engineer, was best known for reforming street cleaning in New York City, where his uniformed crews earned the nickname "White Wings." The portrait was registered for copyright by the studio of Hollinger & Rockey, and its formal seated pose reflects the conventions of late nineteenth-century portraiture of public figures.
