Lilian Whiting appears here in a full-length, seated pose, turned slightly to the left, a more formal arrangement than the head-and-shoulders portraits common for writers of the period. Whiting (1847-1942) was a Boston journalist and author known for her writing on literature and on the lives of notable women, including the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The print was made by J. E. Purdy of Boston around 1904, and the studio's copyright notice and numbering mark it as one of a series issued for public sale.
