Unlike most portraits on this board, this one shows Marshal Ferdinand Foch full length and mounted, turned slightly to the left, as painted by Boston artist Edmund C. Tarbell in 1920. Foch had commanded the Allied armies in the final year of the First World War, and by 1920 he was among the most recognized military figures in the world. The print reproduces the painting in photographic form, and its copyright registration dated February 15, 1921, shows how widely such images were circulated in the years after the war. The horseback pose follows a long European tradition of equestrian portraiture that presented military leaders as figures of command.
