Shown full length and mounted, the king faces slightly to the right, a pose that puts horse and rider at the center of the composition. Władysław IV Vasa ruled Poland-Lithuania from 1632 to 1648 and was known as a patron of the arts and a supporter of military reform, so equestrian portraits like this one presented him as a commander. The record describes this as a halftone reproduction of an engraving, likely made for printed circulation between 1890 and 1940, when such reproductions were common in books and periodicals. The subject also reflects horsemanship in Poland during the 1630s and 1640s, when cavalry remained central to the army.
