Lady Lucy Duff-Gordon, who ran her couture house under the name Lucile, stands full length and faces slightly left in this portrait by the Marceau studio on Fifth Avenue in New York. By the time it was made, she was one of the best-known dressmakers in the English-speaking world, with salons in London and New York that dressed stage performers and society women. The print was registered for copyright in February 1916, a few years after she survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, and it shows how she chose to present herself to the public during that period.
