Seated and turned to the right, the sitter wears a painted face and a headdress of feathers and beadwork. The photograph was made around 1903 by D.D. Wilder of The Dalles, Oregon, whose business also sold novelties and so-called Indian curios to travelers. The Dalles sat on the Columbia River near Celilo Falls, a long-standing fishing and trading place for the Wasco people, whom the record links to this portrait. The sitter is not named, and studio images like this one often reflected what buyers wanted to see as much as the sitter's own life.
