This full-length portrait shows Mary Anderson posed in costume as Galatea, the statue that comes to life in the Greek myth of the sculptor Pygmalion. Anderson, born in 1859, was one of the most celebrated American actresses of the early 1880s, and theatrical roles like this one drew large audiences to the stage and to studio portraits. The photograph was made by Napoleon Sarony, a New York photographer known for his studio portraits of actors and other public figures in the 1880s. Its stiff, sculptural pose suits the role, and the image shows how actors used photography to promote their stage personas.
