Once misidentified as a portrait of the financier Cyrus W. Field, this salted paper print actually shows John Coffee Hays, the Texas Ranger captain who later became a prominent figure in California. He sits in a three-quarter view, turned to the left. The Library of Congress attributes the photograph to Mathew Brady, based on a similar portrait at Harvard's Fogg Art Museum. Salted paper prints like this one, made in the 1850s, have softer, warmer tones than the silver-based images that followed.
