Seated at a desk and turned toward the right, John Wanamaker appears here in a three-quarter-length pose that suits a man whose public life was built on work and correspondence. Wanamaker (1838-1922) built a Philadelphia dry-goods business into one of the country's best-known department stores, known for fixed prices and aggressive newspaper advertising. Around 1890 he was also serving as Postmaster General under President Benjamin Harrison, a post that connected his commercial reputation to national affairs. The portrait is one of the Frances Benjamin Johnston photographs, and her studio work of this period is valued for its careful, unhurried attention to sitters.
