Nathaniel Bacon, the Norfolk gentleman who lived from about 1593 to 1660, sits here in three-quarter length, and the print's notes credit the original painting to "Seipse," Latin for "himself," which points to a self-portrait. Bacon was unusual for his time: a landowner who painted for his own pleasure rather than for a living, working in the Dutch and Flemish manner of the seventeenth century. This engraving, made between 1760 and 1800, reflects the later period's interest in portraits of notable English figures, which circulated widely in collectors' volumes. The seated pose and direct, confident presentation are typical of the portraiture of that era.
