George and Ira Gershwin sit side by side in this three-quarter length portrait, the two brothers who became one of the most celebrated songwriting teams in American theater. George, the younger by two years, was already writing popular songs for Broadway in the early 1920s, while Ira, the lyricist, would go on to craft words for many of their shows. The record dates the picture only loosely, to sometime between 1920 and 1930, and identifies it as a copy of a photograph kept by the Gershwin family, which is why it sits in the Library of Congress's collections of portraits of notable people.
