Andrew Jackson Smith sits three-quarters length and turned to the right, one hand tucked into his coat, a stance common in formal officer portraits of the period. Smith, a Union Army officer who lived from 1815 to 1897, spent much of the war in the Western Theater and later led troops in the Red River Campaign of 1864. The photograph dates from between 1861 and 1865, but this print was made later, a common practice that let studios reuse negatives long after the sitting.
