Seated, three-quarter length, and turned slightly to the right, Andrew Carnegie appears in a print that was once part of an album titled for delegates to the International American Conference, held in Washington, D.C., in 1889 and 1890. The conference, convened largely on the initiative of Secretary of State James G. Blaine, aimed to build commercial ties and encourage arbitration among the nations of the Americas. Carnegie, the Scottish-born steel manufacturer who had become one of the country's wealthiest men, was a well-known advocate of peace and arbitration, so his portrait fits the album's focus on the conference's themes. The print is numbered 25 in the album.
