Two views are paired here: the Baptist clergyman Samuel Francis Smith seated at a table in his study, and the exterior of The Homestead in Newton Center, Massachusetts, where he lived in his later years. Smith is best remembered as the author of the hymn "America," which he wrote in 1831 as a student at Andover Theological Seminary and which was first sung publicly that same year. The c1895 date places the pictures near the end of his life, when he was an elder figure in New England Baptist circles. Some caption details come from an older card and have not been fully verified.
