Seated at a desk and turned toward the right, Count Ulrich von Brockdorff-Rantzau appears here in May 1924, five years after he became the public face of defeated Germany. He led the German delegation at the 1919 Paris peace talks and denounced the terms of the Treaty of Versailles before resigning rather than sign it. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, distributed portraits like this to newspapers, so the picture shows how German diplomats were presented to American readers in the years after the war.
