Seated full length and turned toward the right, this studio portrait shows Mrs. Archer Huntington around 1911. Her husband, Archer Milton Huntington, was the adopted son of railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington and later founded the Hispanic Society of America in 1904. The print carries a copyright notice naming Marceau of New York City, a commercial studio that produced formal society portraits in the early 1900s. Such portraits were often reproduced and circulated, so the image offers a glimpse of how elite New York families presented themselves in the years before World War I.
