Richard Harding Davis, the journalist and novelist, sits full-length in this c1901 studio portrait, turned to his right in the formal manner of the period. The print was made by the Burr McIntosh Studio, a New York portrait firm, and carries a copyright notice from the U.S. Copyright Office, which suggests it was issued for wide distribution rather than kept as a private sitting. Davis was among the most widely read reporters of his day, known for his war correspondence and for popular fiction, and his public image of a dashing, well-dressed man of letters is well served by this carefully posed image.
