Here the composer Aaron Copland sits full-length outdoors, facing the camera squarely, at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Founded in 1907 by Marian MacDowell as a retreat where writers, composers and painters could work without interruption, the colony was a place Copland knew well. Margery Smith's portrait dates from around the 1960s, when Copland was in his sixties and works such as *Appalachian Spring* had already made him one of the most recognized American composers of his time.
