Lillian Gish appears here in a seated, three-quarter-length pose, which was typical of publicity portraits made during the silent era to promote a film's stars. The image is tied to *Way Down East* (1920), D.W. Griffith's melodrama adapted from Lottie Blair Parker's 1898 stage play, in which Gish played the wronged heroine Anna Moore. The film's dramatic climax, in which Anna is stranded on an ice floe drifting toward a waterfall, became one of the most celebrated sequences of silent cinema. Gish, who worked with Griffith for many years, was among the best-known actresses of her day.
