Frank Pierce Sargent sits facing the camera in this three-quarter length studio portrait, a formal pose meant to convey dignity and authority. Sargent rose through railroad labor to lead the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, and President Theodore Roosevelt later appointed him Commissioner-General of Immigration. The print was made by J.E. Purdy of Boston and registered for copyright around 1903, when Sargent was prominent in labor and immigration affairs.
